Slugs are destroying my hostas

Every single year it's the same story — I plant out my hostas looking lovely and within a week they're full of holes. I've tried pellets but I'm worried about the hedgehogs and the dog getting into them.Has anyone found a pet-friendly or wildlife-safe way to keep slugs off? I've heard about copper tape and crushed eggshells but not sure if they actually work in practice.
